We are days from rocking away 🤘🏽 at Parque Fundidora in one of my all time favorite festivals in Monterrey, Mexico, I am talking about Hellow Festival 2018, A festival that has impressed us year after year with must see line ups. Last year we saw the likes of Kendrick Lamar, LCD Soundsystem, Weezer and Neon Indian (our recap here Hellow Fest 2017) just to name a few, a killer line up that was definitely hard to beat, but again this year #HellowFest2018 didn't disappoint (See Line Up Here).
On my series #HeadingToHellow I am going to recommend bands and singers that are farther away from the headliners in the official LineUp but are a must see for anyone visiting Monterrey in a few weeks.
We take off with the genre defying American-Colombian singer Karly-Marina Loaiza better known as Kali Uchis. With songs ranging from Funk, R&B, Reggeatón and a voice sometimes compared to Billie Holliday with a latin twist, Uchis is in a world of her own. Kali Uchis became known from her collaborations with artist like Juanes, Gorillaz, Daniel Caesar and Tyler The Creator, the last one who is also performing at Hello Festival 2018, a surprise appearance in one of their concerts? I hope so!
But it wasn't until her debut album 'Isolation' that we really saw the range and talent that Kali Uchis has. A pleasant album from start to finish that song after song has us at awe at the range of genres she can take and still produce a musically coherent album. A strong statement from the young singer songwriter that is ready to become a gravitational force in the music scene. Definitely one of my favorite albums from 2018. A must listen! 👇👇👇👇
I first heard Kali Uchis at Vive Latino Festival earlier this year by mistake, I was off to see another band and by a fortunate map reading error I got lost and ended up at her stage, from the first song I heard I was hooked and so was the whole group I was with.
She first lured us in with the smooth reggae song 'I Know What I Want' and just after one song I was hooked, just as she finished the song myself and the rest of the group knew we weren't going anywhere from this stage, we were ready for a good reggae concert! but the next song started and she hit us with the smooth jazzy song 'Loner' that immediately reminded me of Amy Winehouse and completely changed my perception of this new artist I was listening to and the concert I was in, and just after two songs I was intrigued, another couple of great genere eclectic songs had us dancing, then came her R&B hit song 'After The Storm' and just after five songs I became a fan. Later came her cover of the song 'Sabor A Mi' singing beautifully in Spanish winning the Mexican crowd even more, she moved on from massive applause to her original songs 'Nuestro Planeta' and 'Tyrant' and just after eight songs I knew I had witnessed something special.
This was one of those moments that reminded me why I love going to music festivals and small concert venues; to listen to new music and get to know new artists. Kali Uchis performance will always be one of my favorite concerts of 2018, A sexy concert that is a must stop at Hellow Festival 2018.
These are my top 5 Kali Uchis songs:
